The traditional culture of Japan, its art, technology, and the spirit of its people are things of which we should be proud to show the world. I would like the world to know better this wonderful country, Japan. What is needed for this to happen are people who can fluently and freely proclaim this message in the world's common language, English. I opened Linden Hall in 2004 with the aim of cultivating, from the age they enter compulsory education, talented students who would be able to do just that.
Our school lies close to the Dazaifu Tenmangu shrine, dedicated to the patron diety of learning, Sugawara no Michizane. Already in ancient times Dazaifu played an important role as a center for exchange with Asia and the rest of the world. It was Michizane who advocated wakon-kansai, the steadfast maintenance of the Yamato spirit while at the same time incorporating continental culture. This later became wakon-yosai during the Meiji restoration, a way to handle relations with Europe and America. I would like to take this and develop it yet further to wakon-eisai, people who, skilled in the use of English as a tool, will be able to impart the spirit of Wa to the world.
「Develop the individual, give them confidence, and send them out into the world.」 This is Linden Hall's dream and its mission.
